Wilmington Gets a Kmart (1973)

1 minute read

In 1973, The S.S. Kresge Company signed a lease for the construction of a K-Mart discount department store at 815 South College Rd. The 94,500 square foot store would open 8 months later and would employ 150 local residents. The store lasted until April 2017 when the store closed along with 77 other stores across the nation as the Sears Holding company battled financial problems before filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2018 and then selling its assets and closing down in 2019.
