In 2002, the New Hanover County Board of Education voted down a proposal to display nine historical documents – The Declaration of Independence, the Mecklenburg Declaration, the Preamble to the North Carolina Constitution, the Halifax Resolves, the Magna Carta, the Mayflower Compact, and the Ten Commandments in New Hanover County schools. The Ten Commandments was the most controversial document and was the cause of most of the opposition. The board voted 4-3 against the proposal as some on the board were worried about the distraction of a lawsuit if they did decide to display the Ten Commandments in schools.
