In 1984, The Wilmington City Council voted 6-1 to strike down the blue law that prevented stores from being open on Sunday. The vote was in response to a petition drive led by Wilmington attorney William G Smith who collected 11,000 signatures of city voters who opposed the law. Minutes after the vote businesses across the area began preparing to open their doors on Sunday.
