In 1963, New Hanover County Commissioners vote down a plan to introduce voting machines to the electoral process. A proposal had been made by Shoup Voting Machine Co that would have provided the county with 50 voting machines for 29 precincts at a cost of $92,500 ($(50kin today’s dollars). The idea was voted down as some commissioners were against the proposal citing the city attorney, Cicero Yow, decision that it would not be legal for the city to use such a system and therefore could not share the cost.
