July 3rd: In 1995, Pender County commissioners asked for then-District Attorney of the 5th District, Jerry Spivey, resignation after he allegedly picked a fight in a bar on June 30th with Ray Jacobs a football player for the Denver Broncos by using a racial slur. Spivey, who by his own statement to an investigator said he drank a lot of scotch that night and didn’t remember anything and that he had a headache the next day, responded by saying he understood their feelings but that he would not resign saying “I’m not going to quit. I’m not a quitter.”
