In 1964, the new Sears Roebuck and Company retail store opened at Hanover Center, moving from downtown. An estimated 4,000 persons, including leaders of New Hanover County’s business and civic communities, surged through the door. Sears would be there for about 15 years before making the jump across the street to the Independence Mall.
