In 1986, NBC’s Today show took to the seas, broadcasting for a week from the SS Norway, then the world’s largest cruise ship. Anchors Bryant Gumbel and Jane Pauley kicked off the special broadcast just off the coast of Wilmington, North Carolina. From there, the floating studio made its way down the southeastern coast, stopping in Charleston, Savannah, and Jacksonville before wrapping up the weeklong voyage in Miami. The broadcast showcased both the grandeur of the SS Norway and the charm of the American coastline.
